Sacred Bark

A$1,500.00

Seeking out the perfect tree on our Traditional Lands, Senior Elder Uncle Major Moogy Sumner shares his skill at carving the bark for coolamons, the giant Red Gums and Blue Gums are also used to make a Yuki (Bark Canoe). Uncle asks for permission from the ancestors and the tree spirit to take the bark, using the same methods but now with modern tools the process of taking the bark is full of patience, teaching and learning. Uncle Moogy shares that when he works on the tree it is personal - the connection to the tree and then when the Bark is off it is about Community. He shares his knowledge with new generations to keep the knowledge alive, the process of drying and shaping is passed on, these incredible pieces of bark created Yuki for Ngarrindjeri people for thousands of years, along the waterways, lakes and rivers of the Coorong (kurrangk), collecting Swan eggs and fishing. As it has always been, our knowledge and skills have been passed down, this has seen us continue our connection to Country (Ruwe) and each other - our ways of being and doing.
